I just want to know who started this weird idea of feeding their baby an ENTIRE cake for their first birthday? Now I'm no health nut but come on...she has never had a sweet treat in her life and then we are expected to overload her in one sitting with a green light to not only binge on 100% sugar plus get totally messy while doing it. So my dilemma you ask? Do I have to participate in this crazy American tradition in 2 days? Maybe just a small cupcake with no frosting? What did you do for your 1st child's 1st b-day?

I know, crazy tradition huh? I totally did with Liberty, and was glad I did. I gave her a big cake to herself, just because I wanted to see what she'd do with it. She loved it, but didn't eat a lot. So fun to celebrate at Disneyland! I can't believe she is one, and she is just cute as ever!! Can't wait to see pictures!
Yeah- it is so crazy that we let them devour a whole cake come 1 years old! My girls were super strange and did not like it very much... certainly DO NOT take after me! :)
Well.. both girls have had sugar running through their blood since they were in the womb. It is a little strange to put a cake in front of them. I think it scares them because neither girl would touch it for a few minutes. Plus..everyone is staring at them..so that makes it worse. Most grocery stores give you a free mini cake if you bring in their birth certificate.
You are such a mean mom! I'm guess there will be no soda until she is 16 also. Give her cake! Kasey Jibson made me a beautiful tiny pink cake with flowers for Shelby's first. Just make sure she is wearing clothes that won't be ruined - maybe she should be alfresca.
I do cupcakes (with frosting and maybe some sprinkles). Calvin was pretty clean and just kept taking big bites until the whole thing was gone. I couldn't believe it and now he doen't really even like sweets. He prefers chips and salsa. Kai had a cupcake with a pipe cleaner palm tree on top. I think he liked the palm tree best but did make quite a mess and didn't really eat much. Good luck, I wish we were going to be at D-land to partake in the festivities. I think we are going the next week.
I think your cupcake idea is a good one. Both my kids had never had sweets until their first b-day, and they both puked their brains out after the cake. I think the whole cake thing is mostly for the enjoyment of the adults surrounding the child. Mommy knows best!
I think it's more to play with then to eat. I think the cupcake is a good idea. If you do let her eat some make sure you stop her early. Tess had never had any sugar either and the next day she was really limp and sleepy all day and puked everywhere at church. P.S. careful what she wears. Tess' clothes got stained from the cake and frosting.
We tried the first cake with Cody but he wasn't interested. He did end up with frosting all over his face thanks to his dad but he was crying the whole time...tramatic. Your idea is probably the right one.
Hi, Just had to add my 2cents. Sabrina had NO teeth at her first birthday and was teething like crazy. Since I'm not a fan of cake anyway we did ice cream cups.(What's cake without ice cream anyway!) Messy, but not anymore than cake. Tradition continues with each child thereafter...
I'm sure no matter what you do (or what she does) it will all be fun.

PS..sorry no rhymes for ya!
What kind of crazy mom are you!? Give that child some cake or else I will behind your back!!!! Just kiddin.
See you tomorrow.
Love,
Your fun friend that is the worst mother because she feeds her kid soda and sweet stuff.
I gave all my kids the cake and costen cried and wouldn't touch it, garron wanted nothing to do with it and tatum just took like 2 licks of frosting. no big deal
I say a cupcake is perfect, but you gotta have the frosting!!
Michael here.....I personally have never even heard of this tradition until I got involved with Ashley's family. I guess that shouldn't surprise you considering how my family celebrates birthdays:) Her family is all about it. I haven't told her yet, but I am still debating on how to handle it when that first B-day arrives....don't say anything;)
Get the darn cake, chocolate frosting and all, strip her naked (leave the diaper) and let her go for it and if she doesn't, take the cake and put it on her face for the picture :) ha ha! MEAN MOM here I guess! I'm emailing you a pic of my girls and their cake-- you gotta have one of Collin, but that's just my thoughts! Besides, you're going to Disneyland, who cares about the rest! Total jeal, did I mention that before?
I have to admit...I love this tradition. It is so entertaining to watch their amazement when you put this cake in front of them and then let them go at it. I usually make a miniature cake just for the birthday kid. C'mon Meg...you only get to turn 1 once! Go for it. It makes for great pictures too.
We let Harrison go at it, but he really wasn't that into it. He didn't like the feeling of the frosting on his fingers and kept trying to shake it off. Do we see OCD in his future or what??
Seriously! Make a small cake-or get one free at a grocery store....and let her dig in. I am pretty sure ALL of my kids made a complete mess, but I enjoyed it just as much as they did. Just strip her down, and have a splat mat underneath her. YOU HAVE TO! Cupcake w/ no frosting...how sad is that.
Megan- I can't believe that you are possibly thinking about not giving her a good ol' birthday cake loaded with frosting. You have to!! And I mean it!! Just strip her down, put a bib on, and let her go crazy. I love looking at Blaze and Jessi Mae's birthday pictures with them covered in frosting. That's why we even have a birthday party when they turn 1... so that we can watch them devour their first birhtday cake and get messy. Don't worry, she'll probably lick the frosting a few times and be done with it but I say let her do her thing and have fun. Oh, and I vote on a small cake, not a cupcake. That's boring!!
Megan, If you are not going to let her have a whole cake, then you must make it up by giving her a "sprinkles" cupcake...only the best for little collin! p.s I am going to send your pics to you within the next week....my birthday present to her.... have fun at d-land!
